What Should Nurse Writers Even Write About?

Sometimes the hardest part of writing isn’t always the writing itself. It’s knowing what to write about. Nurses know a lot, but translating our experience into content for the public can feel intimidating at times.


Here’s the thing; you already have what you need. Every time you educate a patient or explain a diagnosis to a family member, you’re practicing the kind of writing companies are looking for. You just have to shift your audience from the bedside to the screen.


Start With What You Know

Begin by writing about topics you cover every day. Think of the conditions, medications, or lifestyle tips you regularly explain to patients. Those topics are always in demand in the health content space.


Here are a few examples to jump-start your brainstorming:

  • Understanding the difference between stable and unstable angina

  • Tips for managing high blood pressure at home

  • What nurses wish new parents knew before discharge

  • How to talk to your doctor about mental health concerns


If you’ve ever repeated yourself to a patient, that’s probably a topic worth writing about.


Consider Your Audience

At some point, you'll need to think about who you want to help with your writing. Is it patients? Fellow nurses? Family caregivers? Defining your audience will help you choose the right tone and topics.

A blog about medication side effects for patients will look very different from an article about nurse burnout for your peers. The more specific you get, the easier it is to come up with ideas.


Don’t Be Afraid to Get Personal

Some of the most powerful health content comes from personal stories. If you’ve ever struggled with anxiety, recovered from burnout, or lost a patient who changed your perspective, then you have a story worth telling.

You don’t have to share everything. But a little vulnerability can go a long way in connecting with readers.


Keep a Content Idea List

Ideas come when you’re least expecting them. Keep a list on your phone or in a notebook so you’re never starting from scratch. If a patient asks a great question or you read an interesting article, jot it down.

Over time, you’ll build a bank of content ideas you can return to whenever you sit down to write.
